ALL HAIL TARANTULA, as track 2 chants, boasting the impatiently awaited return of Rob Zombie. Following a four year gap between Zombie’s last album and his upcoming release, The Great Satan is due out with a vengeance on February 27.
The opening track, titled F.T.W 84, commences with the ominous ringing of a bell, providing that specific, on-brand eeriness that Zombie fans know and love. The classical opening continues with an announcement, On Behalf Of The Government Of The United States Of America, to the citizens, marking the Beginning Of The Greatest Adventure of their lives. And with a thesis statement as poignantly accurate as that, Rob Zombie is SO back.
Zombie’s Hellbilly roots are deeply grounded and stronger than ever throughout this 15-track album… most clearly demonstrated in track 3, which is more than appropriately titled, (I’m a) Rock ‘N’ Roller. It delivers a vibe correlative to his cult classic (and personal all-time favorite) Living Dead Girl, but dare I say… even better?! Is that possible? Let me put it this way: if the “Chucky” movies decide to make a comeback, I need Jennifer Tilly to strut her stuff to this song in the opening credits. The haunting, pulsating make shit crazy that opens the song and then repeats throughout is so reminiscent of the OG what are you thinking about’s.
A slight shift in the album’s musical tone comes in at track 12 (Welcome To The Electric Age) and continues through until the end. The closing four tracks flaunt a more synthesized, trippy, but still VERY hardcore soundscape. Track 14, Unclean Animals, definitely carries this specific type of electricity, but mixed with Zombie’s infamous growls, making what feels a bit experimental, successful and very much his own.
Catch Rob Zombie on tour with Marilyn Manson all across North America this summer!
